“It is mentioned in the Tyrkjarán* saga that men from Algiers raided and took people at Búlandsnes in Suður-Múlasýsla. Up above the farm, on the lowest ledge, there is a cave-shelter called Álfheiðarskúti. The name came about because a maid from Búlandsnes, named Álfheiður, fled there from the raiders. They chased her. And although much is boasted of their skill on steep ground in the Tyrkjarán saga, it is said that none of them dared reach the shelter for a while, until one of them finally did and got close. Álfheiður defended herself and he toppled off to his death. Then the others grew frightened and gave up. Álfheiður stayed there until the raiders had left Djúpivogur and thereafter had nothing to fear. The shelter is rock-walled on all sides and it is hardly possible to get into it except for bold climbers.” (SS IX, 1950:100)
